Setting up a Project Zomboid server

Updated 4 Nov 2026

Join your server

The first start downloads Project Zomboid from Steam, so it takes a few minutes. Watch the Console tab. When it stops scrolling, your server is ready.

In the game, choose Join and add your address and port. The address and port are at the top of your server page in the panel.

Log in as admin

Join with the Admin Username and Admin Password from the Startup tab. Then use /setaccesslevel Name admin for others.

Settings

Files are in .cache/Server, named after your Server Name:

  • Pterodactyl.ini: password, PvP, mods.
  • Pterodactyl_SandboxVars.lua: zombies, loot, water and power.

Stop the server before editing. Max Players is fixed for your plan.

Add mods

Pterodactyl.ini
WorkshopItems=2169435993
Mods=modoptions

WorkshopItems is the number in the Workshop link. Mods is the Mod ID on the Workshop page.

Turn on auto update

Set Steam Auto Update to 1 on the Startup tab. It starts off.

Problems

Version mismatch

Turn on Steam Auto Update and restart.

Mods do not load

Each mod needs both a Workshop ID and a Mod ID.

Changing Server Name made a new world

Your old world is still there under the old name.
